Sensors
are the lifeblood of unmanned systems. Without the requisite proprioceptive and
exteroceptive sensors, the unmanned system would not function as required in
today’s fast moving environment. In the peer reviewed article, Real Time Corner
Detection for Miniaturized Electro-Optical Sensors Onboard Small Unmanned
Aerial Systems by Lidia Forlenza, Patrick Carton, Domenico Accardo, Giancarmine
Fasano and Antonio Moccia the authors discuss in great detail the advances in
corner detection.
A
significant issue with unmanned aerial systems (UAVs) is identification and
avoidance of objects. In order for UAVs to operate within an interior
environment, such as a factory, school or residence, they’ll need significant
advances in exteroceptive sensing capabilities.
This
article, though tending toward the technical aspects of their research,
compares two distinct algorithm configurations for speed and execution during corner
detection experiments. The article concludes by demonstrating significant
advances in both of these areas which have proven problematic for UAVs up to
this point. The major remaining issue is placing the cameras on an actual UAV
and testing these algorithms during real time flight operations. The tests
conducted during this research appear to demonstrate success as they move
forward with live operations.
This
research applies directly to the articles and videos required for this module. Two
written examples occur in the article, Sensors Get Hot (Rockwell, 2008) where the
author speaks directly to a threefold increase in growth and investment in the
UAV sensor arena through 2016.
The
second example is from the article, Introduction to Remote Sensing by Campbell
& Wynne. The authors speak directly to the remote sensing and spatial differentiation
issues for UAVs. This is the same area the research team was experimenting with
in their Real Time Corner Detection algorithm experiments.
As for
relativity to the module videos, the first remote sensing video, the UGV with
ultrasonic sensors for object avoidance; and the autonomous corridor flight
video all dovetail nicely with my selected article. The videos and articles
surround the common theme as addressed in my selected article.
